- It’s OK to point out things that are different—and things that are the same.
- Play lots of games—both inside and in your yard. Got chalk? Draw a hop scotch on the driveway.
- Put away the phone and really listen to the children.
- Structure and routine are more important than ever.
- Acknowledge and validate negative emotions your child (or you) may be experiencing.
- Make a game out of ways to make a negative into a positive.
- Answer questions with simple, age-appropriate facts.
- It’s OK to say “I don’t know.”
- Take care of yourself.
- Spend one-on-one time with each child, giving them your full attention.
- Make hand washing fun by singing “Happy Birthday” or other 20-second songs
- Make a game out of how few times you can touch your face. Winner gets a prize.
- Play “High/Low” at the end of the day: share a high point and a low point for the day.
- Praise positive behaviors.
